For years, internal platforms were designed as a set of technical tools aimed at accelerating software delivery. Today, that approach is no longer enough. Platform Engineering 2.0 marks a clear evolution: platforms designed as strategic products, focused on the people who develop, operate, and scale digital solutions in increasingly complex environments. It is not only about technology, but about how organisations build, govern, and grow their development capability.

From classic DevOps to mature platform engineering

The rise of DevOps helped break down silos and accelerate delivery cycles, but it also introduced new complexity. As ecosystems grew—microservices, Kubernetes, hybrid cloud, advanced pipelines, observability, integrated security—development teams began to take on a cognitive load that became difficult to sustain.

Platform Engineering emerged as a response to this problem, but its second generation goes beyond simply “abstracting infrastructure”. Platform Engineering 2.0 proposes:

  • Internal platforms designed as products, with a long-term vision
  • Consistent, true self-service development experiences
  • Integrated governance without slowing down delivery speed
  • Intelligent automation aligned with business objectives

This evolution is supported by analysts and technical communities, which by late 2025 already consider Platform Engineering a key practice for mature digital organisations.

The platform as a product: a deep cultural shift

One of the pillars of Platform Engineering 2.0 is treating the platform as an internal product. This means applying classic product management principles to a technical environment:

  • Clearly defining platform “users” (developers, SREs, data engineers…)
  • Measuring adoption, experience, and friction, not just availability
  • Prioritising features based on real impact on workflows
  • Iterating continuously with structured feedback

This approach allows development teams to focus on creating value, while the platform becomes a silent but decisive enabler.

Golden paths, autonomy, and well-understood control

Far from enforcing rigid standards, Platform Engineering 2.0 relies on so-called golden paths: recommended, secure, and optimised ways to build, deploy, and operate software.

These golden paths combine:

  • Proven and reusable architectures
  • Security and compliance built in from the start
  • Observability and resilience by default
  • Flexibility to deviate when context requires it

The result is a real balance between autonomy and control, especially relevant in large or regulated organisations where scaling without losing consistency is one of the biggest challenges.

AI, advanced automation, and intelligent platforms

By late 2025, Platform Engineering 2.0 is starting to incorporate advanced artificial intelligence and contextual automation capabilities—not as a trend, but as a natural evolution:

  • Intelligent assistants for configuration and troubleshooting
  • Event- and behaviour-based automation
  • Dynamic optimisation of resources and costs
  • Continuous improvement of pipelines based on real metrics

These platforms do not just execute tasks—they learn from usage and help make better technical decisions from the start.

A key enabler of digital scalability

Platform Engineering 2.0 has become a strategic lever for companies that need to scale with control, speed, and quality. Industries such as manufacturing, energy, mobility, banking, and digital retail are already using it to sustain complex ecosystems without slowing innovation.

From a practical and expert perspective, this approach shows that the future of development is not about adding more tools, but about designing solid, human-centred platforms aligned with how teams actually work.

In this context, platform engineering becomes a key discipline for building resilient, efficient technology organisations ready for what comes next.
